BRIEF HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION
Of Barangay PANGI
Barangay Pangi got its named from a legend. It was said that during golden days of Pangi was a part of Candanay and it is Sitio Ambacon. There few inhabitants residing in this place and the location of the land owners is there. Declaring was Candanay, long time ago this Barangay was headed by Cabesa de Barangay.
According to the old people, why this Barangay is called Pangi, because this boundary between Poblacion, Siquijor there was a big tree beside a deep well “Atabay” called “Pangi”. Along a big tree beside a deep well used to fetch water for drinking. If the people and their neighbors would fetch water for drinking one should say, where they are going and they reply, they’ll fetch water in Pangi. As years passed by, the people was accustomed to this world, thus this place was named of Pangi, in honor of the big tree “ Pangi” beside the well or atabay.
SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE
The geography of Pangi is inland. It had surrounded by two barangay namely: Candanay Sur and Poblacion Siquijor. It is one kilometre from this municipality of Siquijor and a half kilometre from Candanay Sur and a half kilometre also from the highway to the provincial hospital.
Mostly the people on this barangay are not professionals and their means of livelihood are farming and fishing. Farm products in common ways are kangkong, where the people brought to the market or in the sidewalk. Some people or households have poultry raisings and livestock dispersal.
HUMAN RESOURCES
The barangay has a total population of 1,701. It has also 462 households and total number of 620 families. It has a number of registered voters to 1,017. The average distributions of the population are 25% children and minor, 50% adults and 25% elderly.
It has great potential work, and most of these labor force, are engage in farming. It has ten teachers and 30 others are employed in different government offices. Four families are dressmakers and flower making. These potential work force farming and fishing are under employed, that means their income was just enough for daily consumption of their families.
Due to slow in means of livelihood in this barangay, some young people men and women have ambition in going abroad to secure a better opportunities. So in this place there had nurses and doctors were in United States of America, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, UK, and Saudi Arabia.
NATURAL RESOURCES
The barangay has a total area of 1,248,678 sq. m. The soil is not good and fertile since of it, had affected by erosion. The hilly part is already thinly covered with trees, since it had been affected by getting leaves to feed the pasture animals.
